Exercise as Medicine (Module)

Module description

The module aims to provide allied health and other students with the academic foundation for leadership roles and research in public health with a focus on Exercise as medicine. This is in response to NHS and Public Health initiatives and aims to support the development of capacity, impact and profile of AHPs interested in exercise and pysical activity to promote PH. The module aims to give students the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to meet develop and sustain the contribution of AHPs in Public Health.

At the end of this module, students will:

  • have an enhanced knowledge of the impact of physical activity, sedentary behaviour and exercise on PH including well-being, primary and secondary prevention
  • have a systematic understanding of theoretically underpinned behaviour change techniques as applied to exercise and physical activity in PH
  • be able to flexibly and creatively apply knowledge of and select communication skills for facilitating behaviour change in different and unfamiliar contexts
  • be able to critically evaluate the complex evidence base and strategies and interventions to promote the use of physical activity and exercise as medicine
  • be able to apply acquired knowledge skills and understanding to problem solving in a variety of populations
