Entrepreneurship (Module)

Module description

Explore the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and the behaviour and skills required to 'think out of the box' to identify and pursue opportunities.  We will establish what the behaviours and skills are of an entrepreneur, define creativity and innovation, as well as ask why they are so important to entrepreneurs. We will explore idea generation and evaluation techniques and learn how to recognise enterprise opportunities.

With case studies of entrepreneurs, self-assessment models, peer assessment exercises and group and individual project work focusing on entrepreneurial skills and behaviours, you will get introduced to relevant entrepreneurial management concepts and theories, as well as get the opportunity to realise your own entrepreneurial potential.

Typically the timetable will cover the following themes and subjects (this list is not exhaustive):

Week 1: Entrepreneurial Mind-Set; Working in Entrepreneurial Teams; Interpersonal and Cross-cultural Communication Skills

Week 2: Introduction to Idea Generation; Idea Evaluation and International Business Environment; Creativity vs. Innovation; Understanding the International Market; International Marketing Mix and International Business Models

Week 3: Vision Mission Aims; Intellectual Property Rights; International Competition; Project lifecycle; Business proposal and strategy

Educational aims of the module include, but not limited to:

  • To develop the mind-set and skills that a successful entrepreneur needs for business.
  • To enable participants to acquire a range of relevant entrepreneurial and personal skills, that are relevant for both SME employment/entrepreneurship and self-employment.
  • To develop abilities in critical self-reflection, creative problem solving and market/audience analysis.

Learning outcomes of the module include, but not limited to:  

  • To develop an understanding of the mind-set and skills required to plan and manage an embryonic enterprise.
  • To identify entrepreneurial skills that need development and apply the principles of personal development planning to address current and potential skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge of “developmental tools” that employ research, planning and organisation skills to further develop an entrepreneurial idea.
  • To apply a range of entrepreneurial management principles, practices and skills to the analysis of potential business opportunities.

Staff information

Before joining King's, Michael taught at the University of the Arts as Enterprise Management Lecturer and on the MA in Innovation Management at Central Saint Martins.

He is a former Independent Creative Industries Business Consultant who specialised in working with emerging entrepreneurs in the commercialisation of their ideas into products and services.  He is a highly experienced accredited Business Advisor, a former Enterprise Tutor at the National Enterprise Academy (now the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy); a former Business Support Manager for the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), which is the only organisation in the UK with the remit to promote innovation. At NESTA Michael supported creative arts graduates to develop their ideas into sustainable social and commercial enterprises.

Michael has been awarded an MBA, a Masters in Communications Policy and Regulation; he also holds Post-graduate degrees in Learning and Teaching, Online Tutoring and Multimedia Management.

 He is a Member of the Institute for Learning (Post Compulsory Education and Training) (MIfL), Member of the Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (MIOEE) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

Michael is also a Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI) Accredited Business Adviser an Associate of the Institute for Business Consulting, and a Trustee of the UK’s only business incubator for designer and craft entrepreneurs.

During his career, Michael has worked as a senior manager for a number of prestigious companies including the BBC and Vodafone.
