Postgraduate study options

Learning a new language offers many proven benefits both personally and professionally. Whether you want to add to your education, enhance your career, travel or become a global citizen, we will teach you effective language skills that will last a lifetime.

Postgraduate students have multiple options for language study at King's. The MLC offers FREE (modules, check eligibility) and for payment courses (Evening/Saturday courses with 45% discount for students). 

Free courses

The Modern Language Centre offers King’s postgraduate students the opportunity to take free assessed or non-assessed language modules (see below for conditions).

 


Why you should study a language

  • Add to your employability by learning another language. Open up opportunites to work and live in other countries and increase your earning potential.
  • Learn a new culture. Follow your passion and learn a new language and culture that you have an interest in.
  • Social aspect of language learning. The MLC is an international community with people learning languages from all over the world. Make new friends, gain confidence and enhance your university experience.

Assessed Modules

What's on offer?
  • 14 languages available in 2017-18.
  • Available at complete beginner stage 1 to advanced stage 7 (language dependent).
  • Speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills.
  • Starting in September.
  • Can be taken as part of a King’s degree programme where permitted by the programme regulations (‘for award’) or separately (‘not for award’).

What is the structure? 
  • 2 taught hours per week for 20 weeks (10 weeks each in semester 1 & 2) plus 1 hour of linguistics lectures per week.
  • 4 to 8 hours of self-study per week.
  • Serious academic language study leading to 20 credits at credit level 7.
  • 3 compulsory assessments: oral exam, written exam & linguistics coursework (1500-word essay).
  • Minimum attendance requirement of 75%.
  • Results are on the King’s student records system. 
  • "For award" modules will show on your academic transcript.

Non-assessed modules

What's on offer?
  • 7 languages available in 2017-18: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Latin, Mandarin & Spanish.
  • Available at beginner, intermediate & advanced level, depending on the language.
  • Focused on reading and speaking skills.
  • Starting in September.
  • No formal assessment.

What is the structure?
  • Serious academic language study.
  • 2 taught hours of language classes per week for 20 weeks (10 weeks each in semester 1 & 2).
  • 4 to 8 hours of self-study per week.
  • Minimum attendance requirement of 75%.

LAHP modules

LAHP (London Arts & Humanities Partnership) students can study a language course at the Modern Language Centre. These language courses are focused on supporting your academic studies and enhancing career prospects for students. Learn a language from highly skilled teachers from the MLC at King's College London, the largest language centre in the UK.

Please note: LAHP modules are only available for eligible PhD students. 

Evening & Saturday Language Courses

What's on offer?

  • Substantial discount for King’s students. (45%)
  • 26 languages available.
  • Available at complete beginner level 1 to advanced level 6 (varies per language).
  • Speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills.
  • No formal assessments or exams.
  • Starting in September, January, April & July.
  • Each level has 3 parts with 15 hours of teaching per part.
  • Enrol for 1, 2 or 3 parts (Discounts for enrolling in multiple parts). 
  • Courses taught at the Strand, Guy's, Waterloo and Denmark Hill Campuses. 
How many lessons per week and over the length of the course? 
  • Evening Language Courses: 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks (15 hours).
  • Intensive Evening Language Courses: 3 hours per week for 5 weeks (15 hours).
  • Saturday Language Courses: 3 hours per week for 5 weeks (15 hours).
  • Fast-track Summer Language Courses: 6 hours per week for 2.5 weeks (15 hours).
  • Intensive Summer Language Courses: 15 hours in 1 week.

Tailor-Made tuition

If you want to learn a language at a time and place that suits you, tailor-made language tuition may be the option for you. 

Available for individuals or groups, in 30 languages, tailor-made tuition is your opportunity to have 1-on-1 tutoring with our native-speaker teachers.
