. The International Centre for Security Analysis (ICSA) carries out policy and academic research in three areas:

  • Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons;
  • Open source research methodology
  • Data management.

In addition to these three areas, ICSA performs academic research, consultancy work, and training in open source intelligence (OSINT) methods. ICSA has provided a one-day intensive course in highly advanced internet research methods within the rubric of the KCL Training Researchers to Engage with Public Policy (TREPP) programme. This course has now been developed into a 40 credit module on the core methods of OSINT and security, which will be offered to Master’s students within the Department of War Studies from October 2009. A related is project being developed at ICSA in close co-operation with KCL’s Centre for Computing and the Humanities (CCH), and a number of UK and international partners, is entitled ‘Open source meets open source’, which aims to explore the interplay between open source software and OSINT, with a focus upon the fast-response management of humanitarian crises.
