Description

The Applied Neuroscience MSc programme provides a comprehensive and integrated exploration of our current understanding of the neuroscientific field, and will provide opportunities for students to develop specific interests in the applied neuroscience areas of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, neuroimaging and how neuroscience can impact society.

This 100% online neuroscience master’s programme draws upon the wealth of research, education and clinical expertise and experience across the world-renowned Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN).

From this course you will: 

  • Gain a solid foundation of concepts and theories underpinning our current understanding of the neuroscientific and psychological foundations of mental health.

  • Explore basic neuroscience techniques, and how they are used to study disease mechanisms and help improve treatments.

  • Gain an understanding of how the brain develops, how it works and how this can relate to mental health problems by studying anatomy, wiring and the cellular makeup of the brain.

  • Learn about the latest, cutting edge neuroscientific research being carried out at the IoPPN.

  • Explore the psychological and neuroscientific basis of key mental health diagnoses.

  • Develop an understanding of how studies on gene and proteins through to cells and neural networks can be used to understand the mechanisms underpinning neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric diseases.

  • Understand how technological advances and cross-disciplinary expertise can enhance our understanding of brain function and aid treatment development.

  • Get an insight into the ways neuroscience impacts social problems and behaviours.

  • Acquire core research-related skills using materials and learning materials within the context of the applied neuroscience (MSc only).

  • Select two 15-credit optional modules depending on your area of interest.

Teaching 

The programme is delivered entirely online. There are video lectures, coursework including critical appraisal of published work, essays and abstracts and self-directed learning activities. Assessment will include discussion board participation, multiple choice question and short answer questions examinations.

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations and may typically expect assessment by:

Structure

About

This programme is flexible, and three levels of postgraduate qualifications are offered:

  • Achieve a postgraduate diploma after 120 credits and a master’s degree after completing all 180 credits. Students who wish to exit after the four introductory foundation modules will get the exit award Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health, rather than an award in Applied Neuroscience.

  • Complete four introductory foundation modules, two compulsory advanced modules and two optional modules to earn your postgraduate diploma. 

  • Complete all twelve introductory, advanced, optional and research skills modules to earn your MSc.

Entry requirements

Standard

Academic/professional requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree with 2:1 honours (or overseas equivalent) in any subject.
  • Candidates who achieved a 2:2 in their undergraduate degree will need to support their application with a one page personal statement and an academic reference.

 International applicants may be required to provide proof of English language proficiency. Find out more about our English language entry requirements.

Non-standard

Professional qualifications in an applied area including nursing or other non-medical health profession, counselling, psychotherapy or education may be considered.

Applicants must have a pass (grades A* - C) in GCSE Mathematics or equivalent. Applicants presenting with demonstrable significant work experience in a related area may be considered. Such applicants must demonstrate competency by passing the Biological Foundations module in order to progress onto the postgraduate diploma or full MSc qualification.

Fees and funding

The current fee for the programme, according to the award chosen, is:

Postgraduate Diploma - £10,920 

MSc - £16,380 

Fees will be charged on a modular basis. The fee for each module is £1,365. 

Tuition fees may be subject to an annual increase each academic year in line with King's College London's terms and conditions.  Each increase comes into effect in September each year.

 

The fees from September 2018 to August 2019 will be:

Postgraduate Diploma - £11,464 

MSc - £17,196 

Fees will be charged on a modular basis. The fee for each module is £1,433.

 

Deposit

When you receive an offer for this course you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure your place. The deposit will be credited towards your total fee payment.

The deposit cost for this course is the charge of one module (£1,433) and is due by the 22nd August 2018. 

 

Additional costs

Students will need access to a computer or tablet in order to complete the programme. Although KEATS is optimised for mobile, we do not recommend completing the programme using only a mobile device. Minimum and recommended browser versions are as follows:

  • Apple Safari: minimum - version 6; recommended - latest

You may need to upgrade your browser in the future. Access to a high-speed network connection is also recommended (2.5Mbps minimum). Dial-up, cable and DSL are not recommended.

We will endeavour to make as much study material as possible available online, but you may also need to purchase some books during your studies.

Additional fees information

Student fees for the programme will be billed on a modular basis. Students are billed on the orientation day (the first day of the module) with the due date being 5 days later (inclusive of the orientation day). If you no longer wish to study a module, you can take a break from your studies and claim a refund up until the 8th day of teaching on the module.

Students will be billed for a deposit equivalent to the fee for one module. A standard 14 day cooling off period will apply at the start of the programme. A student who registers on a PG Dip or PG Cert qualification and then upgrades to a higher award will enter a new cooling-off period at the point of upgrade.

Students will enter a conversation with their enrolment advisor to determine if they wish to upgrade. Students will then be billed for the next module 14 days before the orientation date and will enter into a cooling off period from the date of payment.
