Delivered by both research scientists and clinicians, this three year BSc combines sport and exercise sciences with the medical specialty of sport and exercise medicine. This type of course is ever more relevant with the growing focus on public health approaches that aim to treat or prevent disease/injury through physical activity and lifestyle interventions. Graduates will be in an excellent position to progress into a broad range of careers within the medical or sport sciences.

King’s is uniquely placed to offer this course. Our students benefit from a wide range of experts in human physiology, cardiology, psychology, nutrition.  We have a particular strength in research into human physiology relating to sport and exercise sciences (we are ranked first in London*).  

Our students have access to some very special facilities including a fully equipped exercise physiology laboratory and an extreme environment chamber.  We have a brand new biomechanics and motor control laboratory at our Guy’s campus which will support students in learning about performance improvement and recovery.

Dr Richard Bruce

Richard is the BSc Sport & Exercise Medical Sciences course lead. He studied Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham and then completed an MSc in Human and Applied Physiology at King’s College London. Dr Bruce’s research interests include examining the neural control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during exercise, and how this may be altered by chronic disease and contribute to breathlessness and exercise intolerance. Alongside colleagues at Oxford, he is also interested in the development of new technologies that can non-invasively monitor cardio-respiratory function.

Professor Stephen Harridge 

Stephen Harridge is Professor of Human & Applied Physiology and Director of the Centre of Human & Aerospace Physiological Sciences at King’s.  His research interest focuses on human skeletal muscle.  His laboratory uses cell biology through to exercise physiology approaches to study mechanism of function and adaptation, particularly in regard to the ageing process. He is a sports science graduate (West London Institute of Higher Education) and obtained his PhD from the University of Birmingham. He is Editor in Chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports.

Dr Georgina Ellison-Hughes

Georgina is Reader of Physiology and Marie Curie Fellow in the Centre of Human & Applied Physiological Sciences. Her  research focuses on understanding the role of tissue-specific stem cells in the homeostasis and regeneration of striated (skeletal and cardiac) muscle, for repair and maintenance of muscle tissue, particularly preventing and treating a loss of muscle mass (i.e. with ageing and/or disease).

She has a first class BSc Sports Science (Physiology) and PhD entitled ‘Myocyte Death and Renewal in Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle’ from Liverpool John Moores University.FedericoMiekeAlexa

Dr Federico Formenti

Federico is Senior Lecturer in human physiology.  A physiologist and sport scientist, his research interests include human responses to hypoxia, cardiopulmonary and exercise physiology, development of technology for physiological research, and critical care.  He led a study at the University of Oxford in 2015, which has made estimating the oxygen that a cyclist can process much more accurate. Read more.  Dr Formenti leads the Exercise Biology module. He is a Trustee and Member of The Physiological Society.

Dr Mieke Van Hemelrijck

Mieke is Senior Lecturer Cancer Epidemiology and Head of the Cancer Epidemiology Group at King’s. Having studied epidemiology in health research at Harvard, she will teach students about the use of epidemiology in sports, exercise, health, and medicine through introducing concepts around physical activity epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology.

Dr Van Hemelrijck is involved in a wide variety of cancer prevention studies, including the worldwide randomised clinical trial called INTERVAL – an exercise intervention study for men with metastatic prostate cancer which is funded by Movember.

Dr Alexandra L. Georgescu

Alexandra is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London.  Her research interests lie in the investigation of the perception and production of nonverbal behaviour in social interaction and its underlying neural mechanisms in typical development and autism spectrum disorders. She uses a variety of behavioural and neuroimaging tools to study social cognitive processing of nonverbal cues, like virtual reality, eye-tracking, motion-capture and neuroimaging methods like fMRI and fNIRS.NabeelRach

Dr Nabeel Sheikh

Nabeel is Consultant Cardiologist and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Inherited Cardiac Conditions and Imaging. His specialist interest is in heart muscle diseases and athlete’s heart.  He has published important work relating to sudden death in young athletes in major scientific journals, including Circulation which has directly led to the refinement of screening criteria for athletes and informed the new International ECG screening recommendations.

Rachel Bastiaenen

Rachel is a Consultant Cardiologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer. Her PhD work involved non-invasive risk stratification of patients with cardiomyopathy. She has been involved in Sports Cardiology research and screening athletes with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. Her clinical and academic interests are complimentary and include Inherited Cardiac Conditions and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance imaging. She will deliver second and third year modules in Sport, Exercise, Health and Medicine with her colleague Dr Nabeel Sheikh.

Exercise physiology laboratory

Here you will find academics, clinicians and students working on a variety of projects involving the assessment of physiological and clinical measures, or testing multiple aspects of exercise performance and responses to training.

Biomechanics and motor control laboratory

This brand new facility contains a state of the art and fully integrated motion capture system which is used to investigate the mechanisms involved in the control of movements in athletes, the elderly and patients. Here the impact of treatment, training and rehabilitation programmes are assessed on their ability to support the recovery or improvement of performance.

Environmental chamber

Here, we can test how the human body responds to different extreme environments, and how physical and psychological performance can be effected by conditions such as prolonged high temperature and humidity, or low levels of oxygen like that at high attitude.
