Why study this course?

Whilst studying on our interdisciplinary Environmental Science MSci degree, you will explore environmental systems and their interactions, including climate change, ecology, hydrology, natural hazards and sustainability, with an emphasis on lab and fieldwork, data and analytical training.

This course develops specialist environmental science knowledge and skills to that allows students to pursue rigorous research and analysis, beneficial to those seeking to work in consultancy, policy and planning.

Our Geography BA degree will allow you to focus on Human Geography, including Geopolitics, Development, the Environment, Urban and Cultural Geography, Spatial Data Science as well as interactions with Physical Geography & Environmental Science.

This degree includes an optional ‘pathway’ where if students complete three specific modules they graduate with a named Geography (Spatial Data Science) BA.

The pathway is composed of three linked modules in second- and third-year

  2. Principles of Spatial Data Science
  3. Applications of Spatial Data Science

Our Geography & Environmental Science BSc degree, covers a variety of topics including Global environmental change and management, natural hazards, risk earth surface environments and Spatial Data Science as well as interactions with Human Geography.

This degree includes an optional ‘pathway’ where if students complete three specific modules they graduate with a named Geography & Environmental Science (Spatial Data Science) BSc.

What skills will you gain?

The MSci focuses on hands-on learning through extensive fieldwork, laboratory research, and environmental data science training which will result in you developing practical expertise in environmental monitoring, GIS, remote sensing, modelling, and quantitative analysis. 

You will develop practical skills in experimentation and analyses in our dedicated John B. Thornes Laboratory (JBT Lab).

On the BA you will learn advanced critical, analysis and presentational skills that can be applied to understanding a range of real-world issues, and graduate with a career-relevant set of skills, determined by your study pathway.

What career will it lead to?

All three degrees prepare our graduates for degrees across the environmental, governmental, business, NGO and research sectors. In addition, graduates of the Environmental Science MSci will be equipped for careers that require scientifically trained environmental specialists such as environmental consultancy, conservation science and environmental monitoring.

Course style and teaching methods

Each programme offers a blend of lectures, seminars and practical learning, but the balance between these is different between the degrees:

  • On the Environmental Science MSci, you’ll learn through fieldwork, lab sessions and data analysis workshops. You’ll spend time applying scientific methods to real-world environments, and in your final year, you’ll be studying at Master’s level with advanced field and laboratory research modules.
  • On the Geography BA, your learning will be shaped by a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and field trips. You’ll explore big issues through both qualitative and quantitative methods. This programme allows you to pick from a variety of optional modules enabling you to shape your degree.
  • On the Geography & Environmental Science BSc, your teaching would be similar in structure to the BA but with more emphasis on research skills within the physical geography environment. You’ll have the opportunity to gain practical skills via lab work as well as spatial data science training, providing you with hands-on experience of analysing environmental systems.

The Spatial Data Science pathway on the BA and BSc programmes teach methods and techniques of data science using the Python programming language, combining these insights with theory and knowledge learned elsewhere in the programmes.
