Professor Sebastien Ourselin

Professor Sebastien Ourselin is Head of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, King’s College London; dedicated to the development, translation and clinical application of medical imaging, computational modelling, minimally invasive interventions and surgery. In collaboration with Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), he is leading the establishment of the MedTech Hub, located at St Thomas’ campus. The vision of the MedTech Hub is to create a unique infrastructure that will develop health technologies including AI, medical devices, workforce and operational improvements that will be of global significance. Previously, he was based at UCL where he formed and led numerous activities including the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Imaging and Wellcome EPSRC Centre for Surgical and Interventional Sciences.

He is co-founder of Brainminer, an academic spin-out commercialising machine learning algorithms for brain image analysis. Their clinical decision support system for dementia diagnosis, DIADEM, obtained CE marking.

Over the last 15 years, he has raised over £50M as Principal Investigator and has published over 420 articles (over 24,000 citations, h-index 79). He is/was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Journal of Medical Imaging, Nature Scientific Reports, and Medical Image Analysis. He has been active in conference organisation (12 international conferences as General or Program Chair) and professional societies (APRS, MICCAI). About The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences

The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King’s College London is driven by a commitment to improve the way we deliver healthcare through the use of advanced engineering.A diverse and talented group working across the whole MedTech sector, the School advances research, innovation and teaching progress through the shared mission of engineering better health for patients worldwide.

The School’s state-of-the-art labs and clinical-research facilities are embedded in St Thomas’ Hospital, where research projects are fully aligned with current clinical practice. Long-term collaborations with global MedTech companies and new partnerships with innovative start-ups ensure multiple pathways to translation.

Research is organised into ambitious, large-scale and long-term research projects supported by the School’s set of six departments. This diverse infrastructure combines expertise and applies the latest healthcare concepts to deliver ground-breaking results.

This integrated approach is passed to the next generation of healthcare specialists who study with the School’s lecturers. Courses with practical training and real-world application at their core, taking place at the UK’s most research active NHS trust. In 2019 the school received the Queens Anniversary prize, a prestigious award granted every two years by the Queen, for outstanding work that delivers tangible benefits to the public. This will ultimately lead to improved diagnosis, treatment and patient care. Competition for the Prize is strong and is a mark of high-quality education, training and impact on the public
