Research Ethics Office

Each copy of the application form must include all appended documents, collated and stapled together into separate sets.
Urgent applications
If you need to have an application reviewed urgently (outside of a meeting) you can do so via the following process. Please ensure that you follow the process below completely. If you have any problems please email the Research Ethics Office or telephone 020 7848 4077.
It is imperative to give as much advance notice as possible to the Research Ethics Office regarding a forthcoming application for urgent review. For example, if you have been invited to bid for funding and know that the timescale for delivery of research will be very tight, you should inform the Office about your potential application at the point of applying for funding for your research.
-
You should submit a justification letter requesting expedited review, explaining why this research was not submitted by the last submission deadline for the scheduled BDM RESC meeting and why the research requires consideration before the next submission deadline.
-
This will be evaluated by the Chairman and you will be informed of whether urgent review will take place or not within 2 working days. If not agreed the application will be reviewed according to the standard review procedure.
-
During this time (or after) you may submit the application, pending a decision of review (or once review has been agreed). Two signed hard copies of the application and attached documents and one email version should be sent to the Research Ethics Office at the following addresses:
Room 5.11
Franklin Wilkins Building, Waterloo Bridge Wing
Stamford Street
London
SE1 9NH
-
When expedited review has been agreed and the application submitted you will receive a confirmation of receipt and review, stating that you will be sent notification of the Committee’s decision via email and letter within 14 working days.
Should expert advice need to be sought to assist the review, it may be longer than 14 working days before you are notified of the Committee’s decision. However, you will be informed of any need for expert advice. The decision could be any of those available to the research ethics review committee (see Application Guidelines). As such it may be the case that amendments to the application are requested before full approval is granted. Once submitted, these amendments will be reviewed as quickly as possible.
If you are applying for a very long or multi-component research project of which sections are urgent, the BDM RESC would encourage you to submit only the urgent sections for expedited review.
