Social Science & Public Policy, Law, Humanities & KLI
How the application process works
These pages are for the following Schools:
If you are a member of King's Learning Institute (KLI) or are studying for a qualification with KLI then you should follow the same process as applicants within SSPP, Law and Humanities. Your local research ethics panel is the Education & Management Panel. This applies even if you are a staff member in another School studying with KLI.
Risk levels
The Schools covered by this system have a three tier ‘risk’ based system which has a shorter, quicker application process for low risk research (e.g. non-invasive, non-sensitive research) and slightly longer forms and processes for higher risk research.
Submitting using the wrong application process will result in delays to your application. If you are in doubt contact the Research Ethics Office or your local panel administrator as soon as possible.
High risk
All applicants should check that their project is not high risk first. This is identified through the high risk checklist. If you answer YES to anything on the risk checklist, your study is classed as ‘high risk’ and you apply to the Social Sciences, Humanities & Law Research Ethics Subcommittee.
Moderate or uncertain risk
All staff and research students* should apply directly to their department's panel if the project is not high risk. The RESC has five Research Ethics Panels (REPs) operating within the Schools.
A summary of the panels is set out below:
School of Arts & Humanities
School of Law
School of Social Science & Public Policy
Low risk
This process is only available to undergraduate and taught masters students*, including MRes students. If your project is not high risk follow the low risk undergraduate and taught masters research procedure.
*EdD and DMin students may now use the 'low risk process' for their IFS/MFS research projects.
