SCOPE AND CONTENT

The majority of the collection consists of papers and correspondence relating to Darlington's service in World War One, notably time spent in Egypt and on the Helles front, Gallipoli. There are numerous papers relating to training exercises undertaken by the Manchester Regt, and an almost complete set of Battalion Orders for 1/5 Bn Manchester Regt whilst Darlington was their commanding officer, all dating from the period spent in Alexandria and Cairo, Oct 1914-Apr 1915. Also in the collection are two official field service correspondence books used by Darlington whilst in Gallipoli, and containing notes on troop numbers, enemy activity, and trench work. The typescript copy of Letters From Helles (Longmans, London, 1936), dates from the same period (May-Sept 1915), and consists of Darlington's letters to his family describing people and events on the Helles front, Gallipoli.
