The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives is presently preparing an up-dated on-line Summary Guide entry for each of its collections, a collection normally being the papers of a single military figure. The collections are arranged alphabetically overall by named individual. Initial Summary Guide entries will be concentrated upon smaller collections which are likely to be less well known to the scholarly community. Access to the Summary Guides is made via the List of Collections.
We intend to add new entries rapidly as soon as they have been completed from July 1996 and researchers will want to check regularly for additions. If you have comments on any of the entries, please feel free to send us your Feedback.
For each individual, the Summary Guide gives a concise career summary, describes the nature and extent of the papers deposited at the Centre, their provenance and conditions of access. For a number of collections of one box or less the Summary Guide entry will be the only catalogue description available. Where a more detailed catalogue exists, this will be indicated in the individual entry.
ISAD(G): The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives has elected to compile its on-line Summary Guide entries according to the rules of ISAD(G) - General International Standard Archival Description - as established by the International Council on Archives to standardise archival description world-wide. The item numbers included in the Summary Guide entries refer to the rules for Elements of Description which begin with section 3.1 and only include items relevant to our specific archive, consequently, some numbers are not used. The numbers are included for the time being to support experimental developments and are expected to be dropped from the completed guide. Researchers wishing more information may click on the ISAD(G) link in this paragraph.
Plans are being prepared to provide a searching facility for Summary Guides in parallel to that presently offered for the Detailed Catalogues.
