Self-neglect and the safeguarding question
Unit self-neglect research findings presented in Northern Ireland
Over 60 social workers from across Northern Ireland attended a presentation on 2 May 2024 covering the Unit's study of self-neglect among older people. The event was arranged for practitioners who were invited to Queen's University Belfast's social work department by Dr Lorna Montgomery. The presentation by Jill Manthorpe and Nicole Steils was in the context of self-neglect being covered by England's Care Act under its safeguarding provisions whereas new legislation planned for Northern Ireland excludes this dimension.
