Biography

I joined the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and the Department of Psychology, KCL in 2005. I was previously associated with the Royal Free and University College Medical School, UCL 1995-2005.

I am an Honorary Fellow of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

I have a MD (1995, University of London), MPhil (1989, University of London) , BSc (intercalated Psychology), MB BS (1982).

I have authored 6 books and 18 book chapters.

Research interests

  • Psychological understanding and treatment of obsessive compulsive and body dysmorphic disorder, emetophobia and depression
  • Genital body image
  • Chronotherapy
  • Nutrition and mental health
  • Single case experimental design methodology

Teaching

I teach on anxiety disorders to psychiatric trainees on the MRCPsych course, medical students, on the BSc Intercalated degree in Psychology; and on the MSc Affective Disorders course. 

Expertise and public engagement

I was a member of the group that wrote the NICE guidelines in OCD and BDD in 2006 and was Chair of the NICE Evidence Update on OCD in 2006. 

I was a member of the group revising the diagnostic guidelines for ICD11 for Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders for the World Health Organisation.

I am a Trustee of the national charities, OCD Action and the BDD Foundation. I regularly speak at user conferences and in the media.
