Biography

Sophie is a Lecturer in Marketing (Education) at King’s Business School and holds a PhD in Marketing, MA in English Language and Linguistics and a BA in Management with Marketing from the University of Leicester.

She is an HEA Fellow and has been teaching marketing since 2013, when she was awarded a four-year Graduate Teaching Assistantship contract and PhD scholarship. During this time, she also led a module for two cohorts of students on the International Year One programme at the Leicester Global Study Centre.

Sophie then worked as a Teaching Fellow in Marketing for four and a half years, gaining extensive experience designing and leading modules, supervising dissertations at undergraduate, Masters and MBA levels and receiving university honours for excellence in teaching.

She is co-author of “Fundamentals of Marketing 2e” with Paul Baines, Paolo Antonetti and Sara Rosengren (Oxford University Press, 2021), the complete resource for students looking for a streamlined introduction to marketing theory and practice.

Sophie is broadly interested in marketing for the creative industries and generally works with qualitative methodologies. Her PhD research focused on why some consumers remain committed to physical music such as vinyl records in an increasingly digital age.

With the ubiquity of digital media and music streaming ever more popular, this exploratory research led to valuable insights into the allure of the material in a digital society, and notably the role of nostalgia in the consumption of vinyl records. Her work has received multiple awards, such as the Elsevier Peer Recommendation Prize at the University of Leicester’s Festival of Postgraduate Research.

Sophie is currently working on publications derived from her PhD, alongside a more recent project which extends her academic interest in marketing and nostalgia to the context of political marketing communications. Sophie would be interested in supervising PhD projects which align with her research interests, in any of the following areas:

• Marketing and consumption in the creative and cultural industries, especially music.
• Consumer culture, counterculture and (in)authenticity.
• Digitalisation, materiality and nostalgia and their relationship with marketing and consumption practices.
