The redevelopment of Bush House South West Wing (BHSWW) is part of our ongoing efforts to bring key services and activities for students together and improve the overall experience of studying and working on the Strand.
Redevelopment works
Work is now underway on our ambitious plans to create a welcoming, adaptive and innovative space which supports and enhances our student and staff experience. Our exciting plans include:
- A new Student Centre on the ground floor, making it easier and accessible for students to access our support services.
- A unique Agora (place to gather), providing innovative space for teaching, and where students, staff, alumni and external partners can come together to exchange ideas and share learning.
- Interdisciplinary academic space for 200 academic staff and associated postgraduate research student and support staff, with a thematic focus on Digital and AI and complemented by core academic technologists.
- A Showcase space, celebrating the achievements of our students and staff through exhibitions, talks and events.
- Flexible social areas for students to meet, relax and build a sense of connection and belonging

How might this affect me?
Vehicles, including lorries, will need to access the Strand pedestrian areas on weekdays and some weekends. We’ll keep our community safe by ensuring:
- Vehicle deliveries will only take place between 7.00-11.00 and 14.00-16.00.
- Barriers will be erected to prevent pedestrians crossing when any vehicle enters the Strand / Montreal Place interchange.
- All vehicles will move at walking pace and be fully escorted by traffic control marshals at the front and rear of each vehicle.
- Vehicles will enter through the sliding bollards at the Strand/Melbourne Place interchange, entering the Bush House South West Wing construction site through Montreal Place. Westminster Council will not allow vehicles to enter from the western side of the pedestrian area next to Aldwych.
As with all building work there will be some noise. We will closely monitor this during the project and it will be kept to a minimum where possible.
Crane install
From Sunday 23 November - Tuesday 25 November, we’ll be installing a crane to help build our Agora teaching space.
We’re not expecting this to cause too much noise or disruption. We’re putting some measures in place to keep our community safe while the crane is being installed:
- Pedestrian diversions will be in place from Montreal Place, via Aldwych, so you may find it a bit busier than usual.
- Barriers will be in place at the diversion on the Strand and marshals will be available at the site to show you the correct route.
- The Strand pedestrianised area will be closed to vehicles on 24 and 25 November, with access-only arrangements in place.
