Our Clinic has three activity strands, open for students, practitioners, and partners to get involved in:
- Become a Data Empowerment Advisor – KCL students can gain hands-on experience and training at the intersection of law, technology, and governance.
- Work with the Clinic – Partner with us on to co-design and test participatory, empowering data practices in your organisation/community.
- Contribute to learning resources – Help curate and shape accessible tools, case studies, and insights on ethical and empowering uses of data.

How to apply
Applications are now closed. Please email dec@kcl.ac.uk if you are interested in applying in the next round.
While we will prioritise students from Law, Digital Humanities, Informatics or related interdisciplinary fields, we encourage all final-year undergraduates and postgraduate students at King’s motivated by questions of data equity, participation and impact to apply.
2. Work with us on participatory data practices
Our goal is to support a wide range of organisations, such as social enterprises, grassroots organisations and advocacy groups at all stages of their data empowerment journey.
Our approach
We provide support that is underpinned by our goals:
- Ethical data generation – designing data practices where communities can shape how their data is collected, owned, shared, and used
- Participation pathways – exploring ways for communities to actively participate in stewarding their data, or be meaningfully represented in decision making, beyond one-time consent
- Privacy by design – considering which safeguards and technologies are best suited to protect communities form potential data harms
- Impact orientation and acceleration – developing new ways for communities to generate insights from their data and use it to improve and shape shared impact agendas.
Interested in collaborating?
We are currently inviting expressions of interest for case studies to kick-off the launch of our advisory support in January 2026.
If you’re curious about how data could empower your community, support your mission, or amplify your impact—we’d like to hear from you.
We’re also always interested to hear from potential partners or collaborators, who are interested in:
- Co-designing a workshop with us
- Contributing to our learning resources
Email us at dec@kcl.ac.uk.
3. Find out about our learning resources at our upcoming launch event
In partnership with Mozilla Foundation, we are producing a range of accessible learning materials for students and practitioners on ethical and participatory data practices.
