Fostering outstanding supervision for PhD students

Each year, hundreds of doctoral researchers complete PhDs and other doctoral degrees at King’s, before going on to thrive in academia, research, industry, and beyond.

Central to every successful doctorate is the close support of your supervisory team, whose expertise and experience will help you shape your project. As a King’s doctoral student, you'll pursue your research interests alongside academics who are leading the way in their field.

Celebrating supervisory excellence

King’s Doctoral College recognises the vital role supervisors play in our outstanding research culture. We support supervisors to share and develop best practice with their peers through regular workshops and other events. We also take pride in our annual Supervisory Excellence Awards, hosted since 2006, celebrating great supervision across King’s.

The Next Generation Research Supervision Project (RSVP)

Student and Mentor

In recognition of the ways we support exceptional supervision, in 2023 King’s was made a key partner in a four-year, £4.6 million project to transform the culture of doctoral supervision and education, funded by Research England. The Next Generation Research Supervision Project will work with and learn from academics, researcher developers, policy makers, and industry partners to understand how they support staff through onboarding processes, mentoring, and continuing professional development (CPD). The impact of this project will focus on influencing a positive culture change in the way in which doctoral supervision practice is conducted, recognised and rewarded.
