Agency, Repetition and Exhaustion. Indigenous women and reporting violence
This presentation focuses on the different strategies indigenous women use to confront and endure intimate partner violence in Ecuador. This country recognises two legal systems (indigenous justice and state law). My research found that indigenous people’s interactions with indigenous justice and state law can provide community-sanctioned guidelines about confronting abuse, such as norms of what is worth reporting, what is not to be reported, and when and where to file complaints. The restrictions presented by the two legal systems tend to isolate women and discourage them from confronting their aggressors. In that context, they create strategies to endure abuse and protect themselves and their children.
