Queer@King’s is delighted to welcome Professor Dagmawi Woubshet (University of Pennsylvania) to King’s this November!

This is one of two events held at King's by Professor Woubshet.

About Dagmawi Woubshet:

A scholar of African American literature and art, Dagmawi Woubshet works at the intersections of African American, LGBTQ, and African studies. These overlapping areas of inquiry inform his scholarship and research, notably his book The Calendar of Loss: Race, Sexuality, and Mourning in the Early Era of AIDS (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2015). He is currently completing his second book, Here Be Saints: James Baldwin’s Late-Style, and the first English translation of Sebhat Gebre Egziabher’s 1966 Amharic novel, ሰባተኛው መላክ Säbatägnaw Mälak [The Seventh Angel].

The Seminar:

Join us for a graduate/faculty seminar with Dagmawi Woubshet to discuss his recent and forthcoming work. The readings set for the seminar, Professor Woubshet writes, include 'the preface and introduction to my first book, The Calendar of Loss, and a short essay that's forthcoming in a special issue of Souls on HIV/AIDS in today's black queer world. The short essay is also part of a memoir I am working on and written in a style of creative non-fiction/lyric essay. The pairing of the scholarly intro from my book on the role of AIDS art and activism in the 80s and early 90s, and its formative role in contemporary queer identity and thought, coupled with my own personal stakes in the issue today I hope will enable us to have an intimate and productive discussion.'

Please note that spaces for this seminar are limited and that advance registration via queer@kcl.ac.uk is required.
