Decoding Cardiometabolic HFpEF
Speaker: Professor Gabriele Schiattarella
Abstract
The prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases like obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, along with cardiovascular multi-comorbidities, has significantly increased. These conditions, collectively known as cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), are the leading cause of mortality, responsible for 31% of global deaths. Among CMDs, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), particularly the cardiometabolic (obese) HFpEF phenotype, is rapidly becoming the most common form of heart failure. Despite its rising prevalence, effective therapies remain limited. There is an urgent need to uncover novel mechanisms, including the role of interorgan crosstalk, in HFpEF pathogenesis.
Biography
Gabriele G. Schiattarella is a MD/PhD cardiologist-scientist whose research focuses on investigating molecular mechanisms driving heart failure, particularly HFpEF, and cardiometabolic diseases. Dr. Schiattarella received his MD from the University Federico II of Naples (Italy). After completing the Fellowship in Cardiology (Cardiology board) at the same University and starting a PhD program in Experimental Medicine, he moved to the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA. Dr. Schiattarella is Professor of Cardiometabolic Disease leading a research group at Charité University Medical Center and Max Delbrück for Molecular Medicine in Berlin focused on molecular mechanisms of HFpEF, HFrEF and interorgan crosstalk in cardiometabolic diseases. His combines systems biology approaches and experimental models to investigate how metabolic changes, post-translational modifications (PTMs), and protein quality control drive pathological remodeling.
