Professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (Columbia University) will join in conversation with guests at the launch of the Routledge Handbook of Marxism and Post-Marxism, taking place on 17 February, from 16.00 – 18.00.
Also taking part in the event will be South African scholar and anti-apartheid activist Dr Trevor Ngwane (University of Johannesburg).
The book was edited by Professor Alex Callinicos, Dr Lucia Pradella and Dr Stathis Kouvelakis, from the Department of European and International Studies (EIS) at King’s. The event is being hosted by the Seminar in Contemporary Marxist Theory.
The book features contributions from a number of EIS academics and explores the development of what are now ‘a thousand Marxisms’, setting them in dialogue against a global backdrop. Dr Pradella said: “Professor Spivak is among the most celebrated postcolonial scholars in the world so we are thrilled she will be joining us for the book launch and look forward to hearing more from her and Dr Ngwane on Marx and how we can use his ideas and ideals in a tumultuous world.”
The Handbook features contributions from almost 60 scholars from across the world and guides readers through the traditions of the field, starting from Marx and Engels themselves, through the thinkers of the Second and Third Internationals, the Tricontinental, Subaltern and Post-Colonial Studies, to more contemporary figures such as Huey Newton, Fredric Jameson, Judith Butler, Samir Amin and Angela Davis.
