Talk Title: Chronic Pain: Hiding in Plain Sight”

Our primary care research team have been working on Long Term Conditions (LTCs) and multimorbidity for several years now. We have just stumbled across something rather surprising. Of the 32 LTCs which we’re tracking, it turns out that Chronic Pain is one of the most common LTCs seen in primary care. And even more surprisingly, it turns out to be the most ‘costly’ LTC based on health economic analysis of primary care consultation rates. In other words, in the current climate of primary care where there is a huge workforce crisis, the single most demanding LTC in terms of consultation resources is Chronic Pain. Furthermore, Chronic Pain is strongly conditioned by age. Our data represents a novel finding, and I will be presenting further analyses based just on older people, likely to particularly high rates in the elderly and very elderly population.

Talk title: “The Elusive sense: vestibular dysfunction and falls risk in older adults”

This presentation will discuss work from my PhD that looked at the role an ageing vestibular system plays in a person’s falls risk. It will discuss the elusive nature of the vestibular system and implications for clinical practice.
