The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is proud to host the 2022 Harold Moody Lecture, an evening celebrating the legacy of the great Black Briton Dr Harold Moody.

A Jamaican-born medical student at King's, Moody graduated top of his class in 1910. He became a much-respected GP in Peckham and founded Britain's first civil rights movement.

The Harold Moody lecture series was created as an annual event to platform and celebrate King’s diverse alumni and current academic staff, in particular those from a BME background.

Keynote speaker: Professor Stephani Hatch

Accelerating the Pace of Change in Tackling Social and Mental Health Inequalities and Inequities

Stephani Hatch is the Vice Dean for Culture, Diversity & Inclusion and a Professor of Sociology and Epidemiology leading the Health Inequalities Research Group at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. Professor Hatch has over 25 years of experience across sectors, locally and nationally, delivering interdisciplinary health inequalities research with an emphasis on race at the intersection of other social identities. Importantly, she integrates collaborative approaches to knowledge production and dissemination, action and outreach in training and research through the Health Inequalities Research Network (HERON), which she founded in 2010. She also holds national and international advisory roles in health and community sectors.

Abstract:

In this lecture, Professor Hatch will discuss her work in developing and co-leading the South East London Community Health (SELCoH) study, a psychiatric and physical morbidity survey set in the boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth from 2008 to 2015. She will talk about how SELCoH led to current work co-leading the Marginalised Communities and Mental Health programme within the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health, and leading the Tackling Inequalities and Discrimination Experiences in Health Services (TIDES) study, funded by Wellcome, that was expanded in 2020 with ESRC funding as part of UKRI’s rapid response to COVID-19, to focus on inequalities experienced by staff from ethnic minority groups working in health and social care. Finally, she will outline how the current co-development of the Health and Social Equity Collective will bring together social and health inequalities expertise at King’s with partners across sectors in the UK and globally to accelerate the pace of change in tackling inequalities and inequities by honing in on how they are produced, maintained and resisted within and across systems.

Professor Hatch's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion on inequalities within various areas of health and medicine, with each panel member providing an overview of their own research. There will also be a chance for audience members to ask questions.
