John Tavener The Hymn of the Unwaning Light
Rachmaninov Vespers: All Night Vigil

As the First World War raged in 1915, Rachmaninov was horrified by the xenophobia that surrounded him. A genuine patriot, he remembered the sound of the church choirs he loved as a child and composed his All-Night Vigil (or Vespers) as a symbol of all that was most true and valuable in his culture, offering the first performance in aid of war relief. The result was a masterpiece – a deeply moving work grounded in ancient traditions but with something to say to every new generation. Introduced by a stirring piece from John Tavener, sung in procession as candles are lit, this performance by one of the country’s top choirs will be followed by a collection for the Voices of Children charity, which provides psychological support to children who have witnessed war in Ukraine, as well as financial support for their families.

Tickets: £20 • £15 • £5 (UNDER 25) - book here.

Venue: St Mary’s Church, Thirsk

This performance will last around 60 minutes with no interval. After the concert there will be a collection for the Voices of Children charity.
