(Bio)Organic Chemistry With Light: Photoredox catalysis, fluorescence and DNA modifications

Abstract:

Light is an important trigger or energy source for functions in bioorganic and organic chemistry ranging from synthesis, fluorescence and photocatalysis. The lecture will include recent examples of photoredox catalysis for organic synthesis. The photochemical toolbox for DNA modification, in particular postsynthetic methods, delivers artificial functions to DNA in great variety and opens the door for important applications in chemical biology and chemical physics. The usage of light-induced functions allows not only to initiate photoinduced processes but allows additionally the temporal and spatial control of these artificial functions. In the lecture, selected light-induced artificial functions in DNA are presented. This includes bioorthogonal reactions for labelling of DNA, in particular by the postsynthetic “photoclick” reaction, 4-aminophthalimide as isosteric fluorescent nucleoside, C-nucleosides of benzophenones and xanthones to study T-T dimer formation and triplet-triplet energy transfer in DNA, and oligochromophore light-harvesting DNA architectures.
