Soaked in Sirk’s trademark rich colours, this film stars Jane Wyman as a middle-aged widow falling for a younger man played by Rock Hudson. Although in reality there were only 8 years between the two actors, the film depicts the deeply gendered assumptions in mid-century American society about the possibilities open to women over the age of 30 for love and fulfilment if they are to remain respectable.
