Everyday ethics in palliative care
Ethical challenges arise daily in the delivery of specialist palliative care, but there is limited evidence regarding their range and nature. Understanding these is crucial in ensuring training and support is focused, effective, and relevant to time-pressed professionals. Dr Schofield will use data from a systematic review, and a qualitative interview study exploring real world ethical challenges reported by palliative care practitioners in Uganda, to highlight the breadth and contextual nature of day-to-day challenges in palliative care. Dr Schofield will explore the implications of these findings on practice, and future educational and support programmes for palliative care, before examining the role of data in bioethics research more broadly.
About the speaker
Dr Guy Schofield is a palliative medicine physician and visiting senior research associate at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine, University of Bristol. His research interests focus on everyday ethics, postgraduate ethics education, bioethics methodology, and global health. His PhD explored practitioner reported ethical challenges within specialist palliative care in Uganda.
