The Film Studies department at King's College London and the Australian with Serbs Association Inc. invite you to a special screening of By Far Kaymakchalan (2024), a documentary tracing Australia’s forgotten role alongside Serbian forces in WWI, followed by a discussion with historian, Bojan Pajić (author of Our Forgotten Volunteers: Australians and New Zealanders with Serbs in World War One).

Filmed in Australia, Serbia, Greece and North Macedonia over a period of eighteen months, By Far Kaymakchalan is based on Pajić’s discovery of one of the never told stories of Australia’s participation in World War One. Researching in Australian, Serbian, British and French archives, he discovered that over 1500 Australian and New Zealand volunteer doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, soldiers, sailors and aircrew served alongside Serbian forces during the war, even before the landings in Gallipoli supporting the Serbian resistance to Austro-Hungarian and German invasions.

Drawing extensively on archival records and family histories, as well as interviews with scholars, historians and descendents of volunteers, this documentary illuminates one of the forgotten stories of WWI.

This screening will be followed by a discussion with Bojan Pajić, hosted by Dr Stephen Morgan (Lecturer in Film Studies, KCL).
