This is an in-person event in London (subject to travel restrictions) but there is an option to attend online, see further information below.

The Nuclear Security Culture Programme (NSCP) is holding its tenth workshop on the fundamentals of physical protection, focusing on the various nuclear threats posed by non-state actors and measures to mitigate them.

This six-day course will be held from Sunday 27 February to Friday 4 March 2022. Where travel restrictions allow, the NSCP will sponsor participants to travel to London, while providing online tuition for those unable to travel. In-person attendees may arrive on Saturday 26 February.

The workshop is sponsored by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and endorsed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). By joining in this workshop, participants will:

  • Take part in a flexible learning experience, with sessions adapted to both live and online teaching formats.
  • Benefit from a comprehensive programme, which includes a mixture of lectures, real-life case studies, group discussions and a table-top exercise.
  • Gain new knowledge and valuable insight from a broad range of experts from industry, government, academia and the guard force.
  • Interact virtually with a diverse group of global experts in the field of nuclear security.

This workshop is especially relevant to individuals working for nuclear and radiological operators, regulators, government and research institutes. Ideally, participants will have at least five years of professional experience and a basic knowledge of nuclear security.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • Contingency planning and emergency preparedness,
  • Emerging technologies,
  • Information management and cybersecurity,
  • Insider threats,
  • Nuclear and radiological materials,
  • Nuclear security culture,
  • Physical protection systems,
  • Regulation,
  • Security-by-design,
  • Testing and evaluation of physical protection systems,
  • The relationship to safety and safeguards,
  • Threat assessment and design basis threat (DBT),
  • Vulnerability assessment.

It is our intention to host this workshop in a hybrid setting. Those who can travel safely to London will be able to join in person in the UK. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the NSCP following an assessment of your application. Attendance is not guaranteed. Those who cannot travel or do not wish to do so, will be able to join online, in real time with the in-person attendees.

Due to the high demand for this workshop, we require signed confirmation that you will be able to attend before we can arrange travel logistics. If the COVID-19 pandemic restricts international travel at the time of the workshop, you will still be able to join online. We will look to organise regional hubs for those unable to join in London.

In the event that the majority of delegates are unable to attend the workshop in person, the NSCP reserves the right to hold the event fully online in order to provide the best experience for attendees.

The application process to attend this course is now closed and applications are now being assessed. Please direct any questions to: csss@kcl.ac.uk.

Sign up to the CSSS mailing list to stay up to date on all upcoming events and calls for applications.
