From Hollywood’s Golden Age, this once-overlooked film from the director of The Awful Truth and An Affair to Remember looks at the effects of involuntary retirement. Older couple Barkley and Lucy are forced to sell their home when they can no longer find work, but none of their children are willing to take in both of them. McCarey achieves his typical ambivalent tone that mixes plangent humour with real world concerns.
