Abstract

Smart speakers are a popular conversational user interface that allow people to interact with them using their voice and control other connected home devices. While voice-activated technology is often touted as one of the futures of human-computer interaction, there are still challenges to designing these interfaces that support diverse user needs. In this talk, we present insights from two research projects. Firstly, we explore how people who stammer engage with smart speakers, highlighting the challenges they face and proposing ways to improve their interactions. Secondly, we discuss work on multi-party interactions with smart speakers and what we can learn from using conversation analysis to scrutinize these scenarios.
