This conference aims to gather language teachers, researchers and students in order to discuss both the methods and the social impact of studying Portuguese as a 'heritage' language. It will be organised in collaboration with Memoirs - Children of Empires and European Postmemories; a research project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and based at the Centre for Social Srudies (CES), University of Coimbra. Memoirs focuses on the inter-generational memories of the children, and grandchildren, of those involved in, and affected by, the decolonization of French, Portuguese and Belgian colonies in Africa. This project has an interdisciplinary approach and brings together specialists in literary and cultural studies as well as history, sociology, anthropology, the arts and international relations. Furthermore, the project has welcomed institutional partners such as universities, museums, associations, theatres, cultural festivals, cinemas, municipal authorities and schools.
