The year 2018, was a year of looking back: a hundred years since the end of the Great War (WWI) and ten years since the Global Financial crisis created a natural time for reflection and questioning what lessons have been learned. Moreover, at the end of 2018, pioneering IPE scholar Robert Cox passed away; the legacy of his academic endeavours continues to shape academic research in the present day. Having spent a great deal of time looking back at global historical events and thinking about the intellectual legacy of contemporary IPE created by leading figures like Robert Cox, this year’s annual conference looks forward.

What will the next decade, next generation, or next century of IPE bring? What issues, controversies, debates, and crisis will come to define the study of IPE over the next century. The persistence of economic, ecological and political crisis prompt collective consideration of the utility of IPE as a mode of inquiry, academic sub-discipline, or object of study in dealing with the most pressing issues facing survival of humanity and the stability of global economy. In other words, what is IPE good for?

To this end, the 2018 IPEG annual conference seeks to interrogate the issues that will define GPE over the next century as well as the methodologies capable of recognising and addressing them. Our aim is to advance the study of IPE by considering the future of the future of heterodox IPE in a time of normative instability and facing the existential threat of planetary climate disaster.
