Title: It Depends: How Public Partners Can Shape Statistical and Data Research
Abstract: Health statistics and data play fundamental roles in decision making; however, patients and the public are often excluded regarding decisions related to statistics and data research. Our session will explore how public partners can meaningfully shape statistical and data research through patient and public involvement (PPI).
An experienced public partner, Lynn, will reflect on contributing to data-focused projects, sharing insights on both challenges and opportunities. A statistician and researcher, Beatriz, will then present her learnings from the PoINT programme, which investigates PPI in numerical aspects of clinical trials, and highlight the role of creative methods to support dialogue about statistical ideas.
Together, the talks will demonstrate that in statistics, “it depends”: context matters for collecting what is important and interpreting results appropriately.
Speaker Biographies:
Lynn Laidlaw is a highly experienced patient and public partner to research, and a peer researcher conducting research on patient’s experiences living with multiple long-term conditions, shielding experiences and co-production methodology. Lynn lives with a rare disease and multiple long-term conditions.
Dr Beatriz Goulao is a senior research fellow at the University of Glasgow and MRC New Investigator. Her research programme focuses on improving the relevance and communication of statistics and health data to support health decision making and has been funded by the MRC, NIHR, and Wellcome Trust. Beatriz conducts her research in parallel to her role as senior statistician and methodologist supporting the design and delivery of clinical trials, including in oral health and urology.
