In 2015, Project Alpha and the Association of University Legal Practitioners with support from the UK’s Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU) (formerly the Export Control Organisation) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) prepared the “Higher Education Guide And Toolkit on Export Controls and the ATAS Student Vetting Scheme”, which is available online here.
As a follow-on from that initiative, KCL in cooperation with the ECJU are holding an engagement event on export controls for academia in the UK on Friday 22 November. One aim is to alert universities to the current threat landscape in UK universities regarding proliferation risks from countries of concern. A further objective is to update the Higher Education Guide and Toolkit, and thereafter define the roles of the various players to be involved.
Overall, this event serves as a forum for representatives from government and academia to discuss current developments in export controls and their application in university settings.
