We are currently surfing a wave of discovery in biomedical science. Genetics and genomics are paving the way for precision medicine, gene therapy and gene editing. The ability to manipulate the immune system is rendering some cancers treatable that were untreatable, and creating the possibility of switching off autoimmune disease. Insights into what controls cell division may make it possible to promote tissue regeneration in vivo. Brain science is also advancing, and digital technology promises to radically alter the delivery of healthcare. However, the dangers of fashion and optimism bias can easily cloud the picture.

In this lecture, Professor Lechler will review progress and pitfalls.

This is a free event, which means we overbook to allow for no-shows and avoid empty seats. This means we cannot guarantee all ticket holders a place. Admission is on a first come, first served basis. Those without tickets will not be admitted. We will not be admitting people ten minutes after the start time, to minimize disruption.
