Metabolic Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes: Evidence, Indications and Barriers to Accessing Evidence-Based Therapies for Obesity-Related Diseases

Hosted by King's with the support of Diabetes UK

Conference Director: Professor Francesco Rubino

Program Co-Chairs: Professor Rachel Batterham, Dr. Alex Miras

Background:

Despite compelling evidence and broad professional consensus, only 0.1-2% of surgical candidates have access to metabolic and bariatric surgery worldwide. Barriers to access surgery are likely multi-factorial including insufficient awareness among healthcare providers, inadequate coverage and misconceptions about surgery, obesity, and diabetes. In this conference leading medical experts and other stakeholders will discuss current indications to surgical treatment and supporting evidence.

The program focuses also on barriers that prevent use of surgical and non-surgical therapies of obesity and related diseases, with particular regard to the role of stigma and widespread misconceptions about body weight regulation. This event is part of a road map of related educational initiatives leading to the World Congress on Interventional Therapies of Type 2 Diabetes (New York City, April 8-10, 2018) and aimed at facilitating access to care by reducing the impact of stigma and discrimination against people with diabetes and obesity.

This conference is designed to inform clinicians, policy makers, patients and the public.
