This first term of 2025/2026 has seen the launch of the very first 'Music and Mental Health' module offered by the Department of Music and is being taken by both final-year undergraduates and Masters students. This seminar is part of this module but we are delighted to welcome Professor Michael Bakan from Florida State University to join Professor Sally Marlow (IoPPN), Dr Gabriel Lawson (Policy Institute) and Alexander Douglas (Music) to explore different ways music relates to both mental illness and neurodiversity.

We will discuss major depressive disorder, ADHD, schizophrenia and autism. Through these exemplars we will consider how music can reflect, shape and support experiences of mental illness and neurodiverse conditions.

At this event

Alexander Douglas

Lecturer in Music Education

Sally Marlow

Professor of Practice in Public Understanding of Mental Health Research

Gabriel Lawson
