Speaker: Hugh Griffiths, Coordinator of the UN Panel of Experts monitoring the sanctions on North Korea.
Following the recent publication of the latest report to the UN Security Council, Hugh Griffiths, Coordinator of the UN Panel of Experts monitoring the sanctions on North Korea will present on North Korean sanction violation and evasion activities in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, Western and Eastern Europe, Eurasia and North America.
Hugh Griffiths currently serves as the United Nations (UN) Coordinator of the DPRK Panel of Experts and has more than 15 years of experience in investigations and research in the field of air and sea transport, logistics, counter-illicit trafficking, vessel and aircraft monitoring. Prior to the Panel he was a senior researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI where he worked for five years before taking a leave of absence to join the Panel. At SIPRI Mr. Griffiths was the head of the Countering Illicit Trafficking–Mechanism Assessment Projects (CIT-MAP) and amongst other publications authored Maritime Transport and Destabilizing Commodity Flows (SIPRI, 2012) and Air Transport and Destabilizing Commodity Flows (SIPRI, 2009). Before joining SIPRI, Mr. Griffiths was an investigations consultant undertaking assignments for governments, United Nations and non-governmental organizations, principally in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Balkans, conducting field research and analysis on issues related to political economy, war crimes, humanitarian aid and international programe management. Prior to this he worked for the humanitarian relief organization Medecins du Monde (MdM) in refugee camps as well as MdM’s War Crime Trauma Unit in the Balkans and later at the Institute of War & Peace Reporting (IWPR) as their investigations coordinator. He has published extensively, including more than 50 academic, policy and investigative reports and articles. He has a Master’s of Philosophy in International Political Economy (IPE) and a Post-Graduate Degree in international relations from the University of Amsterdam, as well as a degree from the University of Sussex.
