MINDFULLY DIZZY LIVE
“Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom” were words coined in 1844 by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard to describe anxiety as the experience of being overwhelmed by a world of endless choice and possibility. In this live performance by artist Harold Offeh, Kierkegaard’s dizziness is contrasted with the contemporary practice of mindfulness through the overlaying of a series of readings and Dizzy Gillespie’s bebop jazz track Dizzy Atmosphere.
Does the unknown fill you with anxiety? Face your fears and discover the creative possibilities offered by the unknown in this freestyle rapping workshop for beginners, with musician, medical student and Science Gallery London Young Leader Mandeep Singh.
What does anxiety look like? Musician Terribilis and artist Sophie Hoyle experiment with brain-computer interface (BCI) technology in a collaborative performance exploring how the internal processes of anxiety, trauma and body-dysmorphia can be made visible.
What will anxious states be fuelled by in our futures? Do we have any control? Mark Pilkington of Strange Attractor invites you to a communal tarot reading to envision possible alternative futures. The deck, based on actual events, people, histories and scientific projections, is an artwork by Suzanne Treister.
GENES & CROCHET
To what extent is anxiety predetermined by our DNA? Gain tactile knowledge of how our genes are altered by life events in this crocheting workshop, led by artist Meg Rahaim and Michael Carter, a Paediatrician at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, and find out what this means for our mental health. No previous experience of crocheting required!
SENSE OF TIME
How can the way we perceive the flow of time help us to navigate anxiety? Based on the collaborative work of speculative designer Ted Hunt and King’s College London philosopher Matthew Soteriou, this workshop invites you to redesign a clock face and consider how the way we measure time influences our emotional and psychological states.
