Patient-centered and efficacious advance care planning in cancer: findings from the PEACe-compare trial
Speaker
Dr. Yael Schenker is a Professor of Medicine, palliative medicine physician, and Director of the Palliative Research Center (PaRC) at the University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on improving quality of life in serious illness. She has led large-scale trials evaluating palliative interventions in oncology and critical care settings, and she is widely sought after as a mentor and collaborator.
Abstract
Guidelines recommend advance care planning to improve patient-centered care near the end of life, but the optimal approach is unknown. This seminar will present the rationale, design and primary outcomes from PEACe-compare, an NCI-funded randomized trial comparing facilitated vs patient-directed advance care planning interventions among 400 patients with advanced cancer. In addition to highlighting the relative impacts of these approaches, Dr. Schenker will discuss evolving definitions and recent controversies in the field of advance care planning, with discussion of next steps in ongoing efforts to improve the quality and patient-centeredness of end-of-life cancer care.
