Presented by: Tim Newton, Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry

Chaired by: Dr Joe Chilcot, Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology

A founder member of the King's Dental Institute health psychology service, Professor Tim Newton allocates half of his week to clinical commitments, in particular providing cognitive behaviour therapy to support patients with dental phobia to overcome their fear, and support for individual's facing challenging dental procedures.

“The application of health psychology to oral and dental health provides, perhaps unsurprisingly, many important insights and valuable bases for interventions to enhance health related behaviour. However the adoption of health psychology into the training and education of dental teams has been relatively slow. Furthermore with some exceptions there is limited interest within health psychology for adopting oral and dental health as an area of study. This talk will provide an overview of my own experience of working with the field of dentistry, drawing in particular on the example of devising a model of care for people who are anxious about visiting the dentist.”

Booking is not necessary however, due to limited seating, we do recommend you arrive on time in order to secure your place.
