How did Iberian statutes of purity of blood relate to previous and contemporary European and non-European prejudices? How did purity of blood become entrenched in societies with massive and (to a certain degree) successful dissimulation? What was the role of the Inquisition in perpetuating purity of blood? How can we compare New Christians, Moriscos, Black slaves and Native Amnericans concerning prejudices of purity of blood and strategies of survival? Why did the attempts to reform the system largely fail? Why did purity of blood collapse first in Portugal? These are the questions that inform the symposium.

This is a free event with registration opening at 09.15 on 6 December 2019, and welcome starting at 09.45. The session will end at 18.30 on 7 December. For further information about the programme, please download a full programme.
