Queer@King’s is thrilled to invite you to a Queer Protest and Placard Workshop with artist and activist Anka Dabrowska. Join us for this playful workshop that uses stencilling and mixed media to explore how we can build power and utopia across diverse London-based queer communities. The session will begin with an introduction to Anka’s work and a reflection on the visual culture of queer activism. Participants will then be able to unleash their creativity by crafting their own personalised placards, with a focus on the upcoming London Dyke March, London Trans Pride and This is My Culture Party.
All materials will be provided.
About the artist
Anka Dabrowska (b. 1979 Warsaw, Poland) is a lesbian visual artist and activist with a creative practice that spans drawing, illustration, sculpture, stencil, mural and installation art. She also curate exhibitions and facilitates workshops aimed at creating dialogue and community, and has worked with organisations including The Tate, Queercircle, Pushkin House, Gay Times, Soho House, Hackney Council, Act Up London, Tom of Finland Foundation, POMOC (Polish Migrants Organise for Change) and METRO charity.
Anka’s work is born out of extensive research of a given city, town, place, or space, through which she collects hidden traces, stories, and public and private histories. Her practice is rooted in drawing and representations of urban environments which embrace themes of queer empowerment, identity and belonging. She also examines these ideas through sculptures and installations using found materials. Anka holds an MFA from the University of Northumbria and has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. She lives and works in London.
