In this webinar, Professor Marion Oswald from Northumbria University will introduce PROBabLE Futures (Probabilistic AI Systems in Law Enforcement Futures), a four-year, £3.4M RAi funded project.

Led by Northumbria University and involving multiple UK institutions – Glasgow, Northampton, Leicester, Aberdeen and Cambridge Universities – this project critically examines the integration of Probabilistic AI systems, such as facial recognition and predictive tools, within law enforcement.

These systems offer potential benefits but also raise significant concerns, especially where the probable nature of outputs is misinterpreted, leading to serious consequences. The project aims to develop a responsible, rights-respecting framework for the use of AI across various stages of the criminal justice system.

Professor Oswald will cover:

Inspiration: The challenges of decision-making in law enforcement based on uncertain AI outputs

Ambition: Building a justice-focused framework for AI deployment in law enforcement

Impact: Creating a system that informs policy-makers and law enforcement on responsible AI use

Objectives:

– Mapping the probabilistic AI ecosystem in law enforcement
– Learning from the past
– Scoping for the future, including evaluation of contested technologies such as remote weapons scanning
– Focusing upon practical use of AI & the interaction of multiple systems (chaining)
– Using XAI taxonomy and novel methods including story-telling and mock trials using AI evidence
– Establishing an experimental oversight body including members representing under-represented groups
