In making this film, Fassbinder was inspired by the intergenerational love match in Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows, which we are showing earlier on 15 June. However, in his own film, Fassbinder complicates Sirk’s all-American melodrama with issues of race and Nazism. With a powerful central performance from Brigitte Mira, it shows the emotional depths and capacity for love of a women in her early 60s.
