The Centre for Language Acts and Worldmaking is delighted to welcome two scholars from the University of Alicante, Professors Fernando Baños Vallejo and Carme Arronis Llopis. They will present short papers (approx 30 minutes each) on their respective projects on early modern Iberian religiosity and cultural control.

Professor Baños will speak about Catholic hagiographic texts and their reception outside the Peninsula, particularly as translated in England ("Las primeras traducciones al inglés de los flores sanctorum castellanos postridentinos”), while Professor Arronis will discuss the apocryphal tale of Gamaliel, teacher of St Paul, Catalan and Castilian versions of which circulated and were censored in XVIc Iberia (“la censura de lo apócrifo: avatares del Gamaliel en el contexto ibérico del Quinientos").

Together, the papers will address issues of early modern religiosity, cultural translation and control within and beyond Iberia. The papers will be given in Spanish, but the discussion may be in Spanish and English if required. The session will last approximately 90 minutes.
