As a security cordon built to prevent IRA bombs penetrating London’s Square Mile, the Ring of Steel saw the City encircled with some of the most sophisticated surveillance technology of the 20th Century. This talk by Dr George Legg (King’s College London) explores the technologies that made this system so advanced, while also examining the ways such security apparatuses have been represented and critiqued in visual art. The talk will consider how London’s Ring of Steel was indebted to security experiments in Northern Ireland, and how the design of London’s cordon ultimately sought to distance itself from the Troubles.

Tickets cost £8.14 and can be purchased via this Eventbrite page. Includes wine reception.
