Seminar with Mark Hamer, Institute Sport Exercise & Health, UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The link between exercise and health has been studied for well over half a century. In recent years, however, there has been a shift in attention towards the detrimental health effects of sedentary behaviour. In this talk, I will review epidemiological evidence linking sedentary behaviour with major health outcomes and tease apart the importance of exercise in modifying these associations. The introduction of objective physical activity monitoring into large scale cohort studies has transformed our ability to model 24-hour movement patterns. I will present new data from the recent mid-life biomedical assessment of the 1970 British cohort study (n=4,634) that involved the application of novel thigh worn accelerometry to capture free-living sleep, sedentary and movement patterns across the 24-hour cycle.
